Populous, nome d’arte di Andrea Mangia, è un DJ e producer salentino, noto per il suo approccio globale rispetto al music-making. Laureato in musicologia, Populous ha sempre avuto interesse per i generi e gli stili musicali più disparati, ciò si riflette nelle sue produzioni e nel suo focus sui suoni Latino Americani refratti attraverso lenti europee.
Nel 2003, Mangia fa il suo esordio discografico con l’album ‘Quipo’ (via Morr Music), seguito da ‘Queue For Love’ nel 2005. Influenzato dalle contaminazioni reggae/hip-hop presenti nelle sue zone (Lecce è conosciuta come la Jamaica italiana, vista l’estrema popolarità di reggae e dancehall in città) ha realizzato ‘Drawn in Basic’ nel 2008, ben recepito dalla critica internazionale, che gli ha fatto guadagnare un posto di riguardo all’interno della scena dance a livello globale.
Gli anni dieci hanno visto Mangia affinare il suono di Populous con album come ‘Night Safari’ (Bad Panda Records) e ‘Azulejos’ (Wonderwheel Recordings), riuscendo anche a fargli ottenere importanti ingaggi come sound designer da parte di case di moda come Gucci, Vivienne Westwood, Isabel Marant, and Elie Saab, e molti altri. Nel 2020, Populous pubblica il suo album più maturo,"W", un inno alla femminilità in tutte le sue sfaccettature.
"W" (come Women) è un invito ad accettare la nostra parte femminile e un modo per dare visibilità ad alcune tematiche care all’artista, come diversità e inclusione, parti centrali della sua dialettica attivista LGBTQ+. Nello stesso anno, Populous ha collaborato con Christine & The Queens per il remix di "La Vita New", confermando ancora una volta la sua influenza nella scena queer underground internazionale.

Populous, aka Andrea Mangia, is a DJ and producer hailing from Lecce, in Southern Italy, known for his global approach to music-making. With a background in musicology, Populous has always been interested in disparate genres and styles of music, which is reflected in the output from the Populous project and its focus on Latin American sounds as refracted through a European lens. In 2003, Mangia made his first jaunt into the music world with the album ‘Quipo’ (via Morr Music), followed by ‘Queue For Love’ in 2005. Influenced by his reggae/hip-hop-infused surroundings (Lecce is known as Italy’s Jamaica, as reggae and dancehall are extremely popular there) he released ‘Drawn in Basic’ in 2008, which was well received by international critics, earning him a spot on the global dance music map. The 2010s have seen Mangia refine the Populous sound with albums like ‘Night Safari’ (Bad Panda Records) and ‘Azulejos’ (Wonderwheel Recordings), while also expanding his role as a sound designer for fashion houses such as Gucci, Vivienne Westwood, Isabel Marant, and Elie Saab, among others. In 2020, Populous released his most mature album to date, "W", an anthem to femininity in all its facets. "W" (for Women) is an invitation to accept our female side and a way of giving visibility to the issues that are dear to the artist, such as diversity and inclusion, central parts of his LGBTQ+ activist dialectic. In the same year, Populous collaborated with Christine & The Queens for the remix of "La Vita New", thereby confirming his influence in the queer international underground scene.
