In questo libro, Massimo Siragusa mette in pausa la macchina fotografica e si affida alle parole, intrecciando libri di fotografia e opere letterarie in una riflessione sul legame profondo tra luoghi e identità. Al centro di questo racconto c’è quel pezzetto di mondo con cui intratteniamo un rapporto di intimità — fatto di memoria, appartenenza e affetti — che ci definisce e ci restituisce ogni giorno un’immagine di noi. Il paesaggio, qui, è molto più di uno sfondo: è uno specchio, un corpo vivo che racconta chi siamo, le nostre abitudini, aspirazioni e contraddizioni.

Uno scrittore di racconti deve fare in modo che tutti gli avvenimenti presenti abbiano un significato preciso, che tutti contribuiscano a stimolare nel lettore sensibilità, emozioni e conoscenza. Un racconto non svela tutto, ma mostra solo una piccola parte di quello che deve mostrare. Poi c’è tutto il resto, il non detto. Sta in questo gioco il vero fascino. Nell’importanza che il non detto assume nell’equilibrio del tutto. E allora, se questo è il modo di procedere di uno scrittore, cosa fa di diverso un fotografo che ci offre una sua storia? The landscape, here, is much more than a background: it is a mirror, a living body that tells who we are, our habits, aspirations and contradictions.
“There is a beautiful text by Julio Cortàzar, ”Some Aspects of Storytelling,” which, in defining what a story is, explains exactly what a photograph is. For Cortàzar, the short story is a condensation of emotions packed into a few pages. There is no room for gratuitous elements. A short story writer must make sure that all the events present have a definite meaning, that they all contribute to stimulate in the reader sensibility, emotions and knowledge. A short story does not reveal everything; it shows only a small part of what it has to show. Then there is all the rest, the unspoken. Therein lies the real fascination. In the importance that the unspoken takes on in the balance of the whole. And so, if this is the way a writer goes about it, what does a photographer who offers us a story of his own do differently?
