Swim Till I sank è il frutto di molti processi di rielaborazione e stratificazione di un lavoro il cui punto di partenza è il suo archivio fotografico, immagini in un primo momento realizzate per un contesto editoriale, ma molto lontane dall’esaurire la loro vita e funzione una volta pubblicate, quando e se pubblicate.
Nel corso degli anni tornare alla memoria dell’esperienza di quegli avvenimenti ha spinto Gabriele a riappropriarsi di quel materiale visivo attraverso una rielaborazione fisica fatta di sovrapposizioni, commissioni di materiali e tecniche di stampa e di riproduzione dell’immagine, dal trasferimento su trasparenti all’uso della serigrafia, della pittura, del montaggio su supporti differenti che ha allontanato le immagini dal loro prima intenzione documentale dando loro una voce esplicitamente fatta di più livelli di riflessione.
Nella prima parte del workshop verranno condivisi il percorso e le intenzioni creative che hanno portato Gabriele ad un risultato ancora in progress, che, giunto a un suo stato di definizione e compiutezza è stato ulteriormente rielaborato nella forma libro, attraverso la visione e la progettualità di Francesca Pignataro e di RVM Hub, casa editrice del volume.
Nella seconda parte del workshop, il testimone passerà a Francesca Pignataro, che lavorerà insieme ai partecipanti sulle strategie visive, concettuali e di produzione che hanno portato alla finalizzazione del libro.
Durante i due giorni ci saranno momenti di discussione e confronto sui lavori dei partecipanti e sulle diverse modalità e possibilità di produzione.
Cosa portare:
ciascuno dovrebbe portare dieci fotocopie di alcune immagini del proprio lavoro. Assolutamente vietate le stampe fine art, di qualità ed assolutamente vietati gli schermi. Prima di arrivare al workshop, vi chiediamo di passare un po’ di tempo in una cartoleria, negozio di belle arti o simili e se ne avete la possibilità, di comprare uno strumento che vi affascina, vi incuriosisce. Vorremmo infine che leggeste il racconto di Ernest Hemingway Un posto pulito, Illuminato bene, e se possibile scriveste due paragrafi al riguardo.

Swim Till I sank is the result of many processes of reworking and layering of a work whose starting point is his photographic archive, images at first made for an editorial context, but very far from exhausting their life and function once published, when and if published.
Over the years going back to the memory of the experience of those events has pushed Gabriele to reappropriate that visual material through a physical reworking made of superimpositions, commissions of materials and techniques of printing and reproduction of the image, from the transfer on transparencies to the use of screen printing, painting, mounting on different media that has moved the images away from their first documentary intention giving them a voice explicitly made of multiple levels of reflection.
In the first part of the workshop, the path and creative intentions that led Gabriele to a result still in progress will be shared, which, having reached its state of definition and completeness has been further reworked into the book form, through the vision and planning of Francesca Pignataro and RVM Hub, the volume’s publisher.
In the second part of the workshop, the baton will be passed to Francesca Pignataro, who will work with the participants on the visual, conceptual and production strategies that led to the finalization of the book.
During the two days there will be time for discussion and comparison of participants’ work and the different modes and possibilities of production.
What you need:
Everyone should bring ten photocopies of some images of their work. Fine art, quality prints and screens are absolutely prohibited. Before arriving at the workshop, we ask you to spend some time in a stationery store, fine art store or similar and if you have the opportunity, to buy an instrument that fascinates you, intrigues you. Finally, we would like you to read Ernest Hemingway’s short story A Clean, Well-Lighted Place, and if possible write two paragraphs about it.
