“Il mio amico si è ucciso l’8 gennaio. Mi sono chiesto perché avesse scelto quel giorno. Forse perché le vacanze erano finite. Forse per il freddo. Il modo in cui il cielo era pesante e senza vita. Forse non aveva nulla a che fare con quel giorno.”
Nella sua teoria dell’attaccamento, lo psichiatra John Bowlby sostiene che le dinamiche affettive del rapporto tra bambino e genitore nei primi anni di vita siano così cruciali per lo sviluppo psicologico del bambino da condizionare nel profondo la sua capacità di esplorare il mondo e formare relazioni sane o meno in futuro; come dei residui di memoria emotiva sedimentati nel tempo, insinuati tra pelle e muscoli, sempre pronti a innescare o disinnescare certe reazioni del nostro sistema comportamentale.
La serie fotografica The Attachment Theory è una ricerca visiva attraverso il dolore, la memoria e l’identità nata come tentativo da parte dell’autore, Jacopo Papucci, di riuscire, per quanto possibile, a spiegarsi le ragioni dietro a un evento traumatico – l’inaspettato suicidio di un amico – generando così un’indagine intima e complessa sul passato, il trauma e le connessioni che ci plasmano durante la crescita.
Dopo alcuni scambi con gli psicoterapeuti dell’istituto di riabilitazione psichiatrica in cui lavora come infermiere, Papucci ha trovato una possibile chiave di lettura dell’accaduto nei segni indelebili, seppur invisibili in superficie, lasciati dagli abusi emotivi di un difficile passato familiare.
Nella narrazione visiva di Papucci si affiancano fotografie nate dalla collaborazione con i pazienti dell’istituto di riabilitazione a frammenti vernacolari tratti dagli album di famiglia dell’autore, in un ulteriore tentativo di riflettere sui ricordi immortalati nell’archivio familiare e su come la presenza o l’assenza e la qualità di questi snodi emotivi abbiano il potere di influenzarci nell’età adulta.
Creando un equilibrio sottile tra documento e riflessione personale, nella loro incisiva delicatezza le immagini che compongono The Attachment Theory si mescolano in una sinergia d’intenti mossa dal desiderio di comprendere le ragioni dietro a un evento così estremo e processare, sempre per quanto possibile, l’inspiegabile dolore della perdita.

“My friend killed himself on January 8th. I wondered why he chose that day. Maybe because the holidays were over. Maybe because of the cold. The way the sky was heavy and lifeless. Maybe it had nothing to do with that day."
In his Attachment Theory, psychiatrist John Bowlby argues that the emotional dynamics of the relationship between child and parent in the early years of life are so crucial to the child's psychological development that they profoundly influence their ability to explore the world and form healthy or unhealthy relationships in the future, like residues of emotional memory sedimented over time, insinuated between skin and muscles, always ready to trigger or defuse certain reactions in our behavioral system.
The photographic series The Attachment Theory is a visual exploration of pain, memory, and identity, born as an attempt by the author, Jacopo Papucci, to explain, as far as possible, the reasons behind a traumatic event—the unexpected suicide of a friend—thus generating an intimate and complex investigation into the past, trauma, and the connections that shape us as we grow up.
After several discussions with psychotherapists at the psychiatric rehabilitation institute where he works as a nurse, Papucci found a possible interpretation of what had happened in the indelible marks, albeit invisible on the surface, left by the emotional abuse of a difficult family past. Papucci's visual narrative combines photographs taken in collaboration with patients at the rehabilitation institute with vernacular fragments from the author's family albums, in a further attempt to reflect on the memories immortalized in the family archive and how the presence or absence and quality of these emotional junctures have the power to influence us in adulthood.
Creating a subtle balance between documentation and personal reflection, the images that make up The Attachment Theory blend together in a synergy of intent driven by the desire to understand the reasons behind such an extreme event and to process, as far as possible, the inexplicable pain of loss.
